Compost distance to well and boundary

United States

At least 15 m (50 ft) from wells and water features (USDA NRCS guidance; state law may require more).

Distances and rules

A compost heap or manure pile is placed away from any drinking-water source so that organics and seepage do not reach a well or borehole, and with a setback from the boundary so odour and moisture do not disturb the neighbour.

To well / water features At least 15 m (50 ft) USA — USDA NRCS Composting Facility standard (Code 317)

Important limitation

This is a planning aid, not a legal opinion. Before construction, check the local land-use rules, easements, the network/utility operator’s requirements and neighbour buildings.
