About the material
Charred timber (shou sugi ban) is softwood cladding whose surface is burnt and brushed, or stained black, then fixed as horizontal overlapping boards. The carbon layer protects the wood from weather and insects and gives a deep matte black with visible grain.
Where it is used
Barnhouses, garden houses and pool houses, outbuildings, contrast volumes on white or brick facades.
