Well placement rules on a plot

Spain · Auxiliary · depends on foundation

A well or borehole should keep a sanitary protection gap from contamination sources — at least about 20 m from any septic tank, sewer, toilet or compost (more if groundwater flows toward the well) — and the Civil Code regulates distance from a neighbour's wall.

Placement rules

A drinking-water source should be planned before septic and compost locations are fixed.

Boundary setback

Setbacks from plot boundaries and neighbouring buildings.

Sanitary zone

Sanitary protection distances to wells, drinking water and dwellings.

Well / borehole sanitary zone
Distance to septic / sewer / toilet At least ~20 m recommended (more if groundwater flows toward the well) Well-to-septic / contamination separation: at least ~20 m recommended (more if groundwater flows toward the well)

Important limitation

The catalog is a planning aid, not a legal opinion. Before construction, check the land plot category, local land-use and development rules, easements, utility protection zones and neighbour buildings.
