Outbuilding
Garage placement rules on a plot
Germany · Auxiliary · usually permanent
A garage may be built directly on the boundary if it has no habitable rooms or fireplace, wall height ≤3 m, and ≤9 m per boundary (15 m total on the plot); otherwise the ~3 m setback applies. Double/large/RV garages lose the privilege.
Placement rules
A garage is usually treated as an outbuilding; the main planning issues are boundary setback and driveway access.
Garage on the boundary
Allowed: wall ≤3 m, ≤9 m per boundary, 15 m total
Local rules
Otherwise standard setback
Depth = factor × wall height (factor 0.4–1 by state), typically about 3 m
Local rules
Other conditions
Runoff, shading and other local-code conditions.
Exclusions
No habitable rooms; double/large/RV garages lose the boundary privilege

The catalog is a planning aid, not a legal opinion. Before construction, check the land plot category, local land-use and development rules, easements, utility protection zones and neighbour buildings.
