Planting
Tree and shrub distance from the fence
France
Civil Code: 2 m from the dividing line for plants over 2 m tall, 0.5 m for lower ones (subject to local custom).
Distances and rules
Tall trees are planted farthest from the boundary, shrubs closest, so crown and roots do not shade or damage the neighbour’s plot or utilities.
Plant over 2 m tall
At least 2 m from the boundary
France — Civil Code, Art. 671 (planting distances)
Lower plant / shrub
At least 0.5 m from the boundary
France — Civil Code, Art. 671 (planting distances)
Important limitation
This is a planning aid, not a legal opinion. Before construction, check the local land-use rules, easements, the network/utility operator’s requirements and neighbour buildings.
